Landing at Heathrow and heading to Oxford? There's no direct train, but you have three good options: the direct Airline coach, the train via London Paddington, or a door-to-door transfer. This guide compares journey times, luggage, terminals and late-night options so you can pick the right one.
Heathrow to Oxford: All Options Compared

|---|---|---|---|
| The Airline coach | None | About 80โ90 min | Direct travel, any time of day |
| Heathrow Express + train | 1, at Paddington | From about 1 hr 15 min | Speed by rail |

The Airline Coach: Direct from Heathrow to Oxford
The Airline, run by the Oxford Bus Company, is the only direct public transport between Heathrow and Oxford. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and arrives at Gloucester Green Coach Station in the centre of Oxford.
- Journey time: about 80 minutes between Oxford and Terminal 5, and about 90 minutes to Heathrow Central Bus Station, depending on traffic.
- Where to catch it: at Terminal 5, from stand 10 at the arrivals concourse. Terminals 2 and 3 use Heathrow Central Bus Station, a short walk away. From Terminal 4, take the free train or shuttle to Terminals 2 & 3 first.
- Luggage: two suitcases up to 20kg each in the hold, plus one small item on board. Extra suitcases cost ยฃ5 each, and bulky items travel only if there's space.
- Booking: you can reserve seats in advance on the Oxford Bus Company website.
By Train via London Paddington
There are no direct trains from Heathrow to Oxford, but the rail route via Paddington is quick, from about 1 hour 15 minutes in total.
Heathrow Express to Paddington
15 minutes from Terminals 2 & 3, or 21 minutes from Terminal 5. Trains leave every 15 minutes.
Change at Paddington
Look for the Great Western Railway train to Oxford on the departure boards.
Great Western Railway to Oxford
The train from Paddington to Oxford takes around 55 minutes.
It's fast, but you'll carry your luggage through Paddington, and you'll need onward travel from Oxford station to your address.
Via Reading: RailAir Coach and Train
If you'd rather not go into central London, the RailAir RA1 coach runs from Heathrow Terminals 5, 2 and 3 to Reading station in about 40 minutes, depending on traffic. From Reading, take a train on to Oxford. There's no direct train between Heathrow and Reading, so the coach is the most direct link. Check train times from Reading to Oxford with Great Western Railway before you travel.
By Pre-Booked Transfer from Heathrow
A pre-booked transfer takes you from your Heathrow terminal straight to your hotel, college, home or office in Oxford, with no changes, coach stands or station transfers. Journey time depends on traffic. It's usually the easiest option when:
- you have more luggage than the coach allows, or bulky items;
- you're travelling as a family or group and want one vehicle;
- you're arriving late after a long-haul flight;
- your Oxford address isn't near Gloucester Green or the station.

Oxford to Heathrow: Getting Back
The same options work in reverse: The Airline from Gloucester Green, the train from Oxford to Paddington then the Heathrow Express, or a transfer from your door. Heathrow advises arriving two hours before UK and European flights and three hours before long-haul, so allow for traffic or connections.
If you're dropped off by car, Heathrow charges ยฃ7 for every vehicle entering a terminal drop-off area. See our guide to airport drop-off charges.
