Arriving at King's Cross or St Pancras in central London and flying out of Heathrow? There are four main ways to make the journey: the direct Piccadilly line, the Heathrow Express via Paddington, the Elizabeth line, or a taxi straight to your terminal. Here's how they compare.
King's Cross to Heathrow: All Options Compared
| Option | Changes | Typical time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tube + Heathrow Express | 1, at Paddington | About 45 min | Speed |
| Elizabeth line | 1 or more | Around 55 min | A balance of time and cost |
| Piccadilly line | None | A little over an hour | Lowest cost, no changes |
| Taxi or private transfer | None | Depends on traffic | Luggage, families, groups, early flights |
Piccadilly Line: Direct to Heathrow, No Changes
The Piccadilly line runs straight from King's Cross St Pancras to Heathrow, so you can sit down at King's Cross and stay on until the airport. It's the most direct and usually the cheapest route, taking a little over an hour on average. Trains call at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 (one shared station), Terminal 4 and Terminal 5, so check which one you need.
The trade-off is time and space: it's a regular Tube train with stops all the way, and it can be busy at peak times with little room for big suitcases.
Heathrow Express via Paddington
Take the Circle or Hammersmith & City line from King's Cross St Pancras directly to Paddington, then the non-stop Heathrow Express. The whole journey takes around 45 minutes. From Paddington, the Heathrow Express reaches Terminals 2 & 3 in 15 minutes, and Terminal 5 in about 21.
It's the fastest rail option, but also the most expensive, and you'll change trains once with your luggage.
Elizabeth Line
The Elizabeth line runs through central London to all Heathrow terminals. Heathrow suggests reaching it via Tottenham Court Road, with a journey of around 55 minutes. You can also join it at Farringdon, one stop from King's Cross St Pancras on the Circle, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan line. Fares to Heathrow that touch Zone 1 start from ยฃ13.90.
Taxi from King's Cross to Heathrow
A taxi or pre-booked transfer takes you from the station to your terminal door, with no stairs, ticket barriers or changes. Journey time depends on traffic, so allow extra time at rush hour. Heathrow charges ยฃ7 for every vehicle entering a terminal drop-off area, including taxis; see our guide to airport drop-off charges. A taxi is usually the easiest option when:
- you have heavy luggage, a pushchair or sports equipment;
- you're travelling as a family or group;
- your train arrives late at night or your flight leaves early;
- you'd rather not change trains with bags.
